he Irish
Augustinians have had an unbroken presence in Rome since 1656. They were forced
into coming to Europe to train priests because of persecution in Ireland.
Since then, the Irish Augustinians have been resident in five different
locations in the city and took up residence in their present location in the
Villa Ludovisi area in 1892.
It is from here in St. Patrick’s Irish National
Church that the Augustinians have served Irish pilgrims and visitors to Rome.
Today, the church still serves as a meeting place for many of the Irish
community in Rome on a Sunday morning, as well as being a welcoming place for
Irish visitors to Rome. |
